HOW IMPORTANT IS LIGHTING?
Lighting is very often an underestimated part of room design and renovation. Lighting design plays a critical role in not only the look and feel of a space but also its functionality. Proper lighting can completely transform the atmosphere of a room, accentuating its design features. It also has a profound impact on your mood, emotions and well being. Each room is different. From the layout of the room itself, to the furnishings, to the color, all of these variables influence the way we experience a room. Spaces need to be able to provide appropriate lighting for varying activities and functions. The lighting needs of the kitchen can vary from that of a bedroom. So here are a few things you should consider about lighting as a part of your home’s design.
Plan the lighting for a room just as you plan all other aspects of your design, by keeping in mind three basic guidelines: 1. Function, 2. Mood, and 3. Harmony
Function: Consider the various functions you need lighting for. First, you need illumination in certain areas to perform specific tasks, such as reading, writing, or playing a musical instrument. This type of lighting is called task lighting.
In addition, you need sufficient overall illumination so you can see where you're going and so you don't trip over the furniture you've so carefully placed in your room. This is referred to as ambient lighting - the overall lighting that permeates the room.
Both task lighting and ambient lighting are functional.
Mood: As I mentioned, in addition to being purely functional, lighting or general illumination can strongly influence the mood of a room in different ways. As an example, a brightly lit room projects a positive, upbeat mood while a darker room is more intimate and romantic.
The lighting fixtures you select also express a mood. Some fixtures are traditional, some contemporary, some lavish and ornate or starkly simple. As with your furniture, the style of the lighting you select should be suitable in mood to the rest of your decor.
Lastly, you can provide accents of light in specific parts of a room for no functional reason at all but simply because they will add a dramatic touch. This is referred to as mood lighting. For instance, you might shine light up through the foliage of a plant, producing an interesting interplay of light and shadow.
Harmony: The different lighting elements in a room must act together in harmony to produce an interesting yet unified effect. Unity, however, does not mean monotony. The greatest failing in the lighting scheme of many rooms is that it doesn't offer enough variety throughout. This is where many rooms fall short and the result is a lighting scheme that's dark, dreary and drab. The key to avoiding this pitfall is planning.
Plan to use different types of lighting throughout your room for different tasks
Plan to have illumination flow in different directions
Plan to position lighting fixtures at different heights
Plan for different intensities of illumination in different parts of a room
There you have it. Have fun!
