BENJAMIN MOORE - 2022 COLOUR OF THE YEAR
A DECOR8 HOME DESIGN SNACK
Choosing paint colors is probably the one of the hardest decorating decisions to make. With more than 3,500 colors available from Benjamin Moore alone to pick from, it's easy to get lost in a sea of possibilities and options. Believe me, I've made my share of mistakes over the years, painting the same room various shades of the same color. So my advice to decorating enthusiasts is - allow time to experiment. Consider colors as you would a love affair. Much as you may enjoy their company, ask yourself - would you want to live with them?
Given that choosing colors is so much a matter of personal taste, why not start with the ones that attract you the most? Keep in mind though, that color is not static. Daylight, artificial light, matte or gloss finish, and where it's used, on a cupboard or on walls, can often make the same shade look quite different. Also, a color become more instensified when it covers a large area.
Brilliant, sizzing color gives a real boost to the spirits. Think of a field of red poppies, or golden sunflowers. Many people find a dash of bright color in accessories like cushions, flowers or ceramics is enought to lift the quieter base colors they've chosen for their surroundings.
Lighter shades of color brighten dark rooms and are soft on the eye. The paler tints of pink, violet, pale blues and greens are gentle and restful to live with and are often used in bedrooms teamed with muslin drapes and lacy bed linens.
These handsome rusty, spicy hues look superb in Italian frescos and house exteriors under a hot sun. They pair exceptionally well with olive or dusty blue-gray woodwork. Earthy colors respond especially well to rough surfaces and distressing and colorwash treatments which break their flatness and bring them to life. The farmhouse style is a pure example of this decor at work.
Neutral colors work in just about any room of the house. The natural shades of beige, taupe and warm gray also match just about any other color, so you can change up the mood of a room by simply adding a few accent pieces in different colors.
Once you have the base color for your room, work in fabrics and textures that highlight it and add some pop. Create a focal point in the room by adding a contrasting accent wall. Brighten up the design by adding colorful accessories. Those paint samples might seem overwhelming at first, but once you get in and start playing around with different design ideas, you’ll have fun using color to make your house match your personality.
