A DECOR8 HOME DESIGN SNACK

What Makes A Room Successful

Leslee Adams, CID

I grew up in a house where the living room was rarely used.  In fact, we used to joke that just stepping into the room would set off some sort of alarm.  All the furniture was new, fussy, or formal, creating the opposite of what the word living in living room was all about.  An unused room has a particular sensibility that's hard to dispel - for my part I think of a stuffy atmosphere, unyielding furniture and unspoken conversation.

It's been said that a successful room is one that doesn't try to hard, is physically and visually comfortable and manages to delight the people living there over time.  Virtually the complete opposite of what I grew up with.  Given the ease and accessibility of today's design style, it is with no small measure of surprise that I often marvel at the significant efforts that go into developing this effortless look.  Today's design styles center on simplicity.  Simplicity is basically a form of restraint and one must be conscious of it in order to attain it.  But simplicity does not mean that you are allowed only one sofa, one table, one chair.  You don't need to live in a barren room to create a simple, successful design.  A single sofa plopped front and center before a media cabinet does not constitute a compelling room.  Nor does simplicity require that you reject other forms of design altogether.  What is does mean is that you should approach the design of your home with conviction - surround yourself with items that mean something to you and choose furnishings and details that make you happy or inspired or content.

Home has to be the place where you can relax.  It needs to express relaxation without becoming a maintenance burden.  While the days of the cluttered look are over, the rigors of minimalism may to be too demanding for everyday life.  Strike a balance by making sure there's plenty of cupboard space for all the unglamorous bits and pieces and adequate shelf space for sentimental treasures that turn your house into a home, and then choose easy-maintenance furnishings.  Add plenty of items that invite relaxation, such as a plush sofa, cushions, table lamps, and the latest magazines.  Softness underfoot in the form of carpets and rugs just beg you to kick off your shoes for the ultimate in comfort.  Fully upholstered chairs for dining immediately suggest a long and lazy meal with family and friends.  This fresh take on dining room seating - complete with matching cushions for extra back support while eating is both inviting and comfortable.

Yes, trendy styles can be fun but they're not always practical.  Remember, you and other family members have to live in your home, so work toward making it comfortable as well as stylish. Use furniture where you need it, not where it's "supposed" to be.  Place a hutch, sideboard or dresser or amazing accent piece in the living room if the look works for you.  Gather inspiration by looking through books and magazines and noting what color combinations you like in other homes, shops, cafes and restaurants.  It is important to keep in mind however, that your home is really an extension of you.  It should tell your story and be an expression of your own unique personality.
